There’s a new video for Timbaland’s single, Give It To Me. The song features more of the same kind of pop with beats concoction Timba’s known for. It features Nelly Frutado and a c-part sung by Justin Timberlake. Just had to post it.
The Onion’s AV club has a great feature with Deerhoof founder, Greg Saunier, who shares five songs from his ipod with the readers, explaining what they mean to him:
Miles Davis, “The Time Of The Barracudas”
GS: I should probably make sure that everyone who played on this song is no longer living so that I don’t get sued, but this one was a LimeWire find. Actually, it’s not even the complete track. Halfway through the download, the computer I was getting it from got turned off or something, so I only have half the song. But I just couldn’t bring myself to delete it, because it’s so good.
Pitchfork tells the story of the new Todd Haynes film (”Far From Heaven,” “Velvet Goldmine”) about Bob Dylan. Turns out the new film switches between different actors to depict Dylan in different stages of his career. Participating actors in the Dylan role are Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and even Cate Blanchett. Fascinating stuff.
If you really want to understand Todd Haynes, dive into his first long work: the vintage experimental film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, recreating the tragic story of the anorexic singer using Barbie dolls. Here’s part 1:
The other parts are also available. Just search Youtube.
This youtube video demonstrates the ways the music industry works in order to create an appealing pop product: i.e. get an old dude to write a song, let a sexy teen sing it, fix her vocal track digitally and shoot a sexy video for the song. Here’s the clip:
The film this clip was taken out of is a documentary called Before the Music Dies. I suggest you check it out. Here’s the trailer:
Pop punk girl turned hipster woman (brunette turned blond) Avril Lavigne has a new video for “Girlfriend”. Song sounds like a radio hit with a bouncy chorus and brilliant lyrics like : “she’s like so whatever, and you can do so much better. I think we should get together.” Video has the vaboom to match. What a treat:
Oh, and there’s also a way for you to have an Avril Lavigne credit card. Get it? She’s a punk rock artist with an attitude, that has her face on a credit card. So disgusting its funny.
NME spins an interview with Lilly Allen into a tiff with Victoria Beckham, but does offer one interesting fact: during a BBC interview, the singer admitted she still can’t afford a 1 bedroom flat in London. NME quotes the singer: “I’ve been doing what I do for a few years now and I’ve been paid pretty well for it, but even I’m not in a position to buy a one-bedroom flat in the city I grew up in.”
This is interesting, since Lilly Allen isn’t an indie star. She’s a chart topper, a major label artist. This is a prime example of the changing music industry: cds don’t sell as much anymore, and big labels are too greedy to increase the minuscule percentage musicians earn off of every sale. That, and the booming real estate market in London, explain why Lilly Allen doesn’t have enough dough for her own little place.
Those of you who have resisted the sweet temptation and decided not to download the leaked copies of Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible floating all over the p2p networks will be happy to discover that NME is giving a free streaming of the entire album, for the next week! Go get it.
Funniest picture of the week, hands off, goes to this pic of Iggy Pop off of the New York Times:
It’s Iggy enjoying a glass of wine: “His only vice nowadays? A few glasses of Bordeaux, he says. ” reads the caption under this hilarious image. It’s a good, comprehensive article (new york times style) that sheds some light over this new album Iggy and the Stooges are cooking (titled “The Weirdness” and due March 6 on Virgin).
My friends at 8hands (this friendly social web company) just announced a sound event competition. They’re offering a Theremin as a prize (it’s an electronic music instrument that issues sound without being touched). All you have to do is come up with a sound event for their application:
Think of the 8hands logo as a source for inspiration: A sweet little octopus who loves and lives on the Net. Try to imagine it saying “Hey, something interesting just happened!” or “Dude, you gotta take a look at this!” and translate it into short organic sounds.
email sounds to this address: info.8hands@gmail.com and log on to their blog to read more about the sound event culture and the cool people involved like Brian Eno and Robert Fripp.
Arcade Fire were the guests on SNL this weekend, and played the new Neon Bible single, intervention and Keep the Car Running. I hate to poop on the Arcade Fire train, because I love them, but I don’t think the live appearance was successful in capturing the essence of this band. Here are the youtube videos from the event:
