Before W. Bush… there was “Doodles” Weaver

I was listening to a Word Balloon interview with famed Mad magazine cartoonist Drew Friedman when he pointed out that the late comedian “Doodles” Weaver is a dead ringer for George W. Bush.

And you know what? He’s kind of right.

Most recognized as a member of the Spike Jones’ band “The City Slickers”; Doodles also had a long career staring in children programs and and as a guest star in such classics as Batman, Bonanza, Dragnet, and The Andy Griffith Show. A lifelong alcoholic, Doodles would eventually shoot himself in the head at the age of 72; his last job an appearance on Little House on the Prairie.

While Doodles wasn’t the first actor who wanted to kill themselves after appearing on Little House; he probably is the first to have the follow through.

Here’s his most famous sketch; a horse racing parody set to the William Tell Overture.
