This video claims to show a suspicious similarity between hip hop producer, Timbaland’s 2006 beats for a Nelly Frutado track, Do It, and a 2000 track by a Finnish musician called Janne Suni. Did Timbaland copy some beats? I’m not sure. The similarity is mostly between the baseline riffs of the two songs, and they sound so basic, that I’m sure we could find thousands of songs with the same structure. The Youtube maker of this video, a user appropriately named Timbalandrips, seems to be convinced, and tries to broaden the case with an equalized examination of the harmony of each track. Not sure I’m buying this, and not sure that I’m against beat theft - because what is sampling after all - but maybe the Finns do deserve a second chance? You and Magoo be the judge.
