J.K. Rowling: “Dumbledore is gay”
Posted on October 20th, 2007 at 6:18 pm by Dr J.

dumbledore-harris-film.jpgThis is worse than socially irresponsible; it’s bad writing.

From the department of too little too late; author J.K. Rowling on her first American in seven years, responded to a question from a young fan if Dumbledore ever finds true love by revealing, “Dumbledore is gay”.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. “Falling in love can blind us to an extent,” Rowling said of Dumbledore’s feelings, adding that Dumbledore was “horribly, terribly let down.”

Dumbledore’s love, she observed, was his “great tragedy.”

The revelation was frankly a huge cop out; and cowardly on Rowling’s part; who also talked how the Potter series was a “prolonged argument for tolerance”. While it’s true that the personal life of the Hogwarts teachers was rarely touched upon; Snape’s unrequited love for Harry Potter’s mother was a major plot point in all seven of the books; and the Dumbledore/Grindelwald dynamic was critical to book seven yet never adequately explained.

If Dumbledore was gay, I don’t want to hear about it now; it should have been in the book. But it appears Rowling was unwilling to put her money where her mouth is; risking derailing the sales juggernaut that was Harry Potter, by featuring an openly gay character in it.

Rowling can trumpet tolerance all she wants and put in moralistic subplots about “House Elfs” but at the end of the day the only Harry Potter universe that really matters is the one people pay money to read, and that’s a world without gay people.

JK Rowling press conference down blouse

You’d think if there was one writer in the world who didn’t have to show boob to sell books would be the woman who created Harry Potter but hey; I guess this is the LA version of that “when in Rome…” maxim.

Anyway, here’s the JK Rowling down blouse. After the jump is footage is of her reading from Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows ’cause the beginning kind of sounds like gay porn.

Harry Potter still alive; his rap career not so much

You’d think Harry Potter in the hood would be referring to his invisibility cloak but no, this is actually the inevitable Harry Potter is gangsta video. As a concept, it’s clichéd out of the box but two things save this song. One, the unintentional comedy of “Harry’s” British accent, which can’t seem to decide if it wants to stay or go; and two, the song lyrics which are actually intentionally funny.

Created by Allan Murray and Sean Haines; this is actual the duo’s second hit YouTube video after their Paris in Jail song; which has already gotten over 8 million hits.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: reviewing the spoilers

harry-potter-small.jpgWith the release of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows just about at T Minus and counting; Scholastic’s lawyers have been in overdrive trying to get websites posting allegedly plot spoilers to cease and desist.

Since unlike Scholastic’s lawyers, I’ve heard of something called the First Amendment and since we won’t get to review the real thing for another two whole days; I thought I’d review the various permutations of the plot floating around the internet.

Version #1 - A popular BitTorrent, the alleged story behind this version is some guy got a hold of the American version of the book, and painstakingly photographed every single page with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel Camera. While it would be an elaborate hoax if that’s what it is; this version claims that Harry, Ron, and Hermione all live; while Hedwig the Owl and Snape die.

While J.K. Rowling is already on the record as saying two major characters die; it would be a real stretch to call Hedwig the Owl a main character. I don’t buy it.

Version #2 - In this version Ron dies, Lupin dies, Voldemort dies, Snape dies, and worst of all Percy dies. No not Head Boy!

Harry Potter countdown: Potter fans insane
Posted on July 15th, 2007 at 11:28 am by Dr J.

harry-potter.jpgSimilar to “Trekkies” before them; there’s something just creeps the shit out of me about hardcore Harry Potter fans. Like a cult with dumber costumes, they strike me as sex fiends who don’t even have the requisite social skills to actually molest children.

Case in point: sisters Chloe and Sydney Bostian have started waiting on line outside in front of Gulliver’s Books in Fairbanks, Alaska a full 11 days before “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” July 21 release date!

To fully grasp how idiotic this is, you have to understand that this isn’t a case of first come, first serve, like with the iPhone; the sisters have already reserved four copies of the book. Meaning even if the city’s entire 82,000 population snuck in line before them; their copies would still be held for them.

Giving Sydney a free pass, after all she’s only 11; the 18-year-old Chloe explains that they’re doing it to beat her childhood friend Graham Tordoff to getting the book; another dubious rationalization as Graham has a job and can’t wait on line 24/7.

I wish someone would just give the Bostian sisters and the like an advanced copy; sure it’s rewarding obsessive behavior but I want these creepy kids off the streets by the time I go to buy my copy.
