Tila Tequila: MySpace sex symbol, film critic, next president
Posted on July 2nd, 2007 at 5:00 pm by TheMuse

Tila Tequila, the MySpace hot babe of the century, has recently published an agitated post on her over-flooded MySpace blog, regarding Michael Moore’s new movie, “SICKO“. It looks like Tila is fed up with the DIY stardom and she’s now aiming much higher: to become the first US female and midget president. Hilary Clinton might think she can earn votes by letting the people choose her campaign song; but Tila Tequila holds her own secret, ready-to-use weapon on her way to the DC: two good looking MySpace boobies and one digital cam.

Here are a few excerpt from the Tila Tequila movie review, accompanied by our special presidency rating system:

After watching this movie I am left feeling INFURIATED with the American Government. The United States of America is the richest country in the world so can someone please tell me why we have the WORST system for healthcare??? Why is it that we are the only country without National Healthcare? This problem could easily be fixed, and if a less enriched country such as CUBA can offer free healthcare and services for the people there…..why are we not able to do that here in America????

CAPS and a pile of question marks are politicians’ no. 1 friends. Very good, 10 points.

Why do we throw the sick and the poor out on the streets because they can’t afford healthcare or do not “qualify” for it? We are talking about saving people’s lives here with such a small thing. I pay taxes….we all pay taxes but where is all this tax money going?

Tila Tequila pays taxes, which is completely lame. Taxes are for nerds and Al Gore. Minus 12 points.

This is such a rich country yet we are the WORST at taking care of one another. Don’t you find it a bit bizarre that people have to PAY to go to college to get an education????

Yes we do. We also find it a bit bizarre to name yourself after a Mexican alcoholic drink. However, 28 points earned for the 4th question mark.

Why do students have to pay to get a better future that will in turn lead them into giving back to our community? Instead they get caught up in years of debt, hence leaving them in the rat race cycle of neverending work in order to pay off debt….not leaving much room for leisure.

Tila Tequila obviously knows the true meaning of leisure, and it’s perfectly reflected in her new album. However, since we’re all broke and generally suppressed by the US government, we won’t be able to buy it. Oh well, minus 29,567 points.

Read the rest here, if you dare.

Top myspace band: Creature Feature
Posted on June 4th, 2007 at 10:33 am by TheMuse

Horror is cool again! As the act who reached the honorable 3rd spot on this week’s myspace top electro chart , is no other than the puerile horror-rock duo, Creature Feature.

Heading from “Lost Angeles”, Curtis Rx (vocals/guitar) and Erik X (keyboards/synth) are two seriously obsessed fans of classic horror cinema, with a love for direness and all things ghastly and ghoulish. When these twisted kindred souls met up last year (at a Halloween party, appropriately enough), they knew they had to collaborate. Borrowing from Alice Cooper and Fischerspooner at the same time, Creature Feature have created a sound that can be described as “gothic rock electro” hybrid. Their love of B-movies and vintage Sci-Fi à la Ed Wood, flavors the entire landscape of their songs, and in the near future it should spill into some horrific music videos and movies that they are yearning to create.

Creature Feature try to turn the classic horror chic to a hip thing, as they declare that we will “dig them like a grave” and that they are “Halloween 365 days a year”…

Myspace chart review: Jeffree Star
Posted on May 28th, 2007 at 11:23 am by TheMuse

Jeffree Star
Jeffree Star is an eccentric transvestite and Myspace celebrity who reached the honorable 10th spot on this week’s Myspace Unsigned top Pop artist chart.

Star’s songs consist of him desperately trying to be offensive by saying “fuck” or “Cunt” as many times as possible in two minutes, mostly on top of instrumental versions of quite known songs, such as Usher’s “Same Girl”. His lyrics cover a wide variety of themes, from being a Gay to being very gay.

This kinky phenomenon has created a massive network of a hundred and fifty thousand scene and punk kids all over the globe and gained almost 5 million profile views in less than a year. His flurry tactics are as basic and boring as calling himself Jesus and “going against the norm”, this of course works when your fanbase is a bunch of bored to death, glue sniffing juveniles. Here’s Jeffree Star performing his hit “We Want Cunt” live . And here’s my personal favorite, Ice Cream:

Myspace music: Maps
Posted on May 22nd, 2007 at 10:20 am by TheMuse

Northamptonshire, U.K’s James Chapman, aka Maps (originally going under the name Short Break Operator), is a quite unique sound sculptor, who combines indie electronics with atmospheric, sleepy rock that owes as much to shoe-gaze and space rock acts such as Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 as it does to Electronica pioneers such as Four Tet, Ullrich Schnauss or Boards of Canada.

Chapman makes dance records for the ear rather than the dancing feet, as he’s not some spotty geek making music consisting of bleeps and klangs on sophisticated software and expensive pieces of equipment, but using all real instrumentation, spliced on an old analog 16 track recorder. All sharp musical corners are excluded as Chapman’s killing melodies and singing requires a listener willing to relax and unwind rather to dance his guts off, head-bang or stage-dive.

After a succession of self released 10” singles that became collector’s items for some awkward men who worship their record collection above anything else, Maps signed to the legendary British Mute label and released its debut album, titled, We Can Create, only a week ago. The album was produced by Valgeir Sigurosson (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Björk) and co-produced and mixed by Ken Thomas of Sigur Rós.

The piece is hugely ambitious, widescreen epic, that recalls everything from the deep and minimal electronics of Basic Channel and Carl Craig, through the hippie songwriting style of the Flaming Lips and Grandaddy to the euphoric soundscapes of Mercury Rev and My Bloody Valentine. We Can Create will likely appeal to a large segment of pop music listening population, but has enough sonic embellishments placed on to satisfy more picky music listeners.

Circa Survive
Posted on May 21st, 2007 at 10:44 am by TheMuse

Philadelphia’s Circa Survive is an experimental rock band consisting of former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green with guitarist Colin Frangicetto and other members of the now defunct This Day Forward. When the two met around 2005, they were already veterans of the local emo and hardcore scenes who were looking to indulge in the rule-breaking freedom of the neo-progressive movement of the mid-2000s.

CS primal aim was to bring back that quality that was extremely present in the music of the 60s and 70s, “That urgency, the feeling that a note could change the world. That’s one extreme. Another is just simply to be an artist that isn’t contrived or a trend follower…”, as Frangicetto puts it. On the other hand, Green cites Paul Simon, Dredg, and Björk among the artists who have influenced the vocal style and songwriting in Circa Survive, which is comparatively less aggressive than Saosin or This Day Forward.

The band recorded their debut album, Juturna (named after a Roman goddess), for Equal Vision Records in 2005, and gained with it relative success among previous bands’ fans. Their new album, titled, On Letting Go, will be out in the end of this month, this time covering much more influences and genres, ranging from prog-rock and experimental ambient Eno-styled soundscapes to art and funk metal, which reflects both the diverse backgrounds and the common bonds of individual band members. Check out a temporary non-official “music video” for the song “In the Morning and Amazing”, taken from the new album, here:

Kennedy is the new king of the internet
Posted on May 15th, 2007 at 1:42 pm by TheMuse

kennedy naked
Featured on youtube, king of myspace, this jumpy kitschy pop kid called “Kennedy” is doing all the right things conquering the internet music phenomenon spotlight. Forget the Arctic Monkeys and constant topless pics of Tila Tequila. This younger Weird Al Yankovic meets American-jewish version of Jarvis Cocker (circa pulp days) is all the rage (and he was snagged yesterday by the Warner records group’s Cordless).

Myspace Band: Land of Talk
Posted on May 15th, 2007 at 1:40 pm by TheMuse

Montreal based musical innovator Elizabeth Powell, has been banging out “Anti Folk Basement Rock” since the tender age of fourteen. Originally a violinist, Powell formed the Land of Talk around two years ago, and since spits out some churning, bright, deliberately melodic rock that embodies the enduring spirit of freedom and youth. Influences can be traced back to the likes of early P.J. Harvey, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., while their songs combines catchy pop hooks with brash, progressive instrumentation and still create something that’s entirely accessible.

Land of Talk’s debut E.P., titled, Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, was released a few months ago and contains some muggy, smoky, moody, reverby rock that pulls them into a subterranean world of their own. With Powell’s snotty, sensitive and dynamic presentation, coupled with progressive songwriting and layers of complex soundscapes, Land of talk definitively got the elements required to distinguish itself from the lot.

One Myspace Band at a time: Prototypes
Posted on May 14th, 2007 at 10:21 am by TheMuse

Heading from Paris, France, Prototypes are an indie pop trio that was formed in 2003. Fronted by vocalist Isabelle Le Doussal (who used to perform under the name, Bubble Star), the group blends sexy French chanting, garage rock guitars, new wave styled synths and chic and primitive punk rock drumming, to an enlivening, live-wire sound that jumps right out of the speakers and kicks you in the pants. You can hear bits and influences from Holly Golightly, Stereo Total and the B-52’s to Bo Diddley, Françoise Hardy and Sigue Sigue Sputnik, all mixed to a firm homogeneous and much entertaining package.

The band released its first LP, titled, Tout le Monde Cherche Quelque Chose, in 2004, on the French Barclay label, which didn’t grab the attention it deserved. The follow up was 2006’s frisky sounding, Mutants Mediatiques, which caught the attention of Minty Fresh records in the US, who released Prototypes’ stateside debut a few months ago, a CD that is practically a collection of songs from the band’s two previous releases. A song from it, “Who’s Gonna Sing”, was featured in an Apple iPod Shuffle add, and “Je ne te connais pas” is featured in a BMW 1 Series TV commercial in Germany. Check out the amusing 80’s influenced (in a Bananarama sort of way), music video for “Who’s Gonna Sing”, here:

Robot Sex with Datarock
Posted on May 8th, 2007 at 10:39 am by TheMuse

Datarock is a Norwegian duo consisting of Frederik Saroea and Ket-Ill - two happy fellows who enjoy singing about gay themes. They produce inspired dance music, combined with guitars and cheesy, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Frederik and Ket share a love for the likes of Devo, Talking Heads and the Happy Mondays, which they took inspiration from when they decided that the only way to handle things was to do everything by themselves: the music, the artwork, and the website.

With their questionable leisurewear and inclination for writing songs about robot sex and the possibility of women having manly organs, you might not take Datarock too seriously, but musically, they’re completely innovative, combining the most basic electro pop and addictive Parliament style P- Funk, all done with a Talking Heads sense of style, (borrowing David Byrne’s renowned affectations), that’s both pesky and compulsive.
