The Superbowl plays out tonight (go Bears!) and Prince is going to reign over the half time show. It’s exciting, because Prince is a genius, a musician so crazy and fabulous that’s rarely seen in such public events, and a mastermind and leader of the anti record label movement. So before we dive into the beer and pretzels and snarl at the “awesome commercials”, it’s a perfect time to get an update on the artist who was once formerly known as Prince (heh).
A quick visit to prince.org, the one stop fan site for the genius, reveals Prince has just released a new song called “Guitar” and that it’s available for download (for $1.99) on 3121.com. It’s not official, but the fans claim this is a single from a new album, a follow up to 3121. If I were Prince, I would release it now, what with all that Superbowl attention. But I’m not Prince, so I’ll shut up.
Stereogum is describing Prince’s hip problem, and wonders whether the sex crazed Prince (who’s now a Jehovah’s Witness) will be able to move around on high heels and grind his mic stand like he used to. The Wikipedia entry on Prince is very comprehensive and includes the always amusing list of monikers Prince went by through history. Face it: the legend’s almost 50 years old.
Here’s a 1989 Prince appearance on SNL:
And last but not least, he’s got a myspace page.
